History

Scoil Chonglais, located in Baltinglass, County Wicklow, has been a cornerstone of post-primary education in the region since its establishment in 1982. The school was founded to accommodate the growing educational needs of the community, transitioning from the original vocational school premises to a more spacious campus on the Kiltegan Road. This transition allowed for the expansion of facilities and the introduction of a broader curriculum.

Over the decades, Scoil Chonglais has maintained a strong commitment to academic excellence, personal development, and community engagement. The school offers a comprehensive traditional Junior and Senior Cycle curriculum, while also encompassing L2 Learning at Junior Cycle, Transition Year at 4th year and Leaving Cert Applied for Senior Cycle students. Scoil Chonglais ensures students receive a well-rounded education that balances core subjects with a variety of options, languages and electives.

Beyond academics, Scoil Chonglais encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities, fostering a holistic educational experience. For instance, second-year history students have engaged in projects exploring the origins of Valentine’s Day, creating heart-themed displays that blend historical research with creative expression.

The school’s dedication to environmental awareness is evident through the offering of an alternative learning experience in an ‘Outdoor Classroom’. Other initiatives include the creation of a ‘B&B for birds and bugs,’ a project undertaken by students to support local biodiversity. This hands-on approach to learning emphasizes the importance of ecological stewardship and community involvement.

Scoil Chonglais continues to evolve, embracing modern educational practices while honoring its rich history. Its sustained focus on nurturing academic and personal growth ensures that it remains a pivotal institution in the Baltinglass community.
